Mbale District Councillors accuse District Boss of Land Grabbing
A section of Councillors at Mbale District Local Government are
accusing the LCV Chairperson Bernard Elly Mujasi of conniving with investors to
grab District land.
Alfred Namasa the Councillor representing Busiu Sub County at the
District accuses Mujasi of claiming to attract investors by initiating the give
away of District land. Namasa cites plot 10-12 on Independence Avenue in Mbale
town which is now housing Mount Elgon Hospital.
According to Namasa, Mount Elgon Hospital which was given a 25 year
lease for the land has acquired a title, an indicator that the land has been
taken over. He says such investors are using District land to acquire loans to
run businesses.
Namasa wonders how a private valuer hired by Mt Elgon Hospital valued
the land with its buildings at 1.6 billion and yet the District leased it out
at 120 million shillings.
Henry Manana the Northern Division Councillor at the District says
Mujasi should explain how Mount Elgon Hospital acquired a title for land that
is under the jurisdiction of the District. Manana says they are not witching
Mujasi but only aiming at protecting public assets from grabbers.
But Mujasi has dismissed the allegations as baseless. He says Mt Elgon Hospital was free to acquire
a loan using the land.
According to Mujasi, he has no personal interest in Mt Elgon Hospital
but only agitates for more investors developing Mbale.
Meanwhile the councillors of Mbale district local council also want a
specific investigations committee to be set up so as to investigate on the
various plots of land that are purportedly sold off by the Mbale district Lcv
chairperson which include:
Mt Elgon hospital,
